Guide to design, construction and operation of clinics using Building Information Modeling.

Healthcare is one of the core industries of the German economy with a share of 12% of the gross domestic product according to a study by the BMWi from 2018. Hospital construction, as a highly complex task in terms of interdisciplinarity, user interests, architecture and technology, takes up a large share of the total construction investments of the public and private sector every year. A key indicator for the high investment costs is the constant transformation of medicine, but especially the continuous progress in the course of digitalization. Innovation cycles in technology, especially in medical technology, are becoming shorter and shorter, and functional, hygienic and operational requirements are becoming more and more important. Unstructured design processes, missing cost and schedule information, lack of communication and lack of transparency between project participants should be avoided in the future by using the digital working method Building Information Modeling (BIM) over the entire life cycle. The goal of many hospital managers to carry out significant cost reduction measures in the area of structural maintenance during operation is also to be achieved through the implementation of the BIM method.

The KlinikBIM research project provides a generally applicable guideline in which a holistic BIM strategy is manifested for all builders and operators of future hospital projects. The developed BIM strategy is based on a concrete analysis of the strategic goals of the different hospital owners involved in the project as clients, which are translated into specific BIM goals and underpinned by the assignment of validated BIM use cases from the test and pilot phase.

This scientifically validates and produces important foundations for the implementation of BIM in healthcare construction. Thus, there is no direct commercial benefit.
